    Short Term Rehabilitation

    Getting you back into life.

Following a heart attack, stroke or major surgery, you may need to undergo therapy to regain your strength and abilities before you can leave the hospital.

Rome Memorial Hospital's Residential Health Care Facility is home to its short term rehabilitation program. Here patients can receive physical, occupational and/or speech therapy to help them regain their independence so they can go home.

Short term rehabilitation can help you rebuild your strength, retrain your body or regain your speech. Our treatment plans are individualized to help you set and meet realistic goals. Most individuals require a combination of physical, occupational and speech/swallowing therapy, along with skilled nursing care. Patients may receive up to three hours of therapy 5-6 times a week for 2-4 weeks.

The short term rehabilitation team includes physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, dietitians, pharmacists, social workers, activities professionals and the admission/discharge coordinator. Family members may also be involved in your care or other individuals you choose.

Short term rehabilitation services are reimbursable through Medicare and most private insurance carriers with a referral from your primary care physician with pre-approval.

    Patients Served.

Short term rehabilitation serves adult and geriatric patients in need of physical, occupational and/or speech therapy. This in-patient rehabilitation is well suited for individuals recovering from orthopedic conditions, or who may not be medically able to participate in a more intensive acute rehabilitation program.

The program is available to patients who are recovering from conditions such as:

    • Total Joint Replacement.
    • Hip and knee fracture.
    • Heart attack
    • Stroke
    • Pneumonia
    • Congestive Heart Failure

    What you can expect.

    The programs feature:

Exercise, to help you increase endurance, strength and flexibility. You may ride a stationary bike or perform exercises while sitting, standing or lying on a mat. You may also use weights to build strength. You will work on activities of daily living and walking to improve your functional level in order to return home.

Education, which is specific to each individual and will help each patient learn about their own unique needs.

Medication and equipment education, such as how and when to take medications and how to use oxygen (if prescribed).

Speech Therapy, to help you restore language skills lost to a stroke. Our speech therapists will also help teach you and your family methods for coping with this often frustrating impairment.
